The History of Cenozoic Carbonate Flux in the Atlantic Ocean Constrained by Multiple Regional Carbonate Compensation Depth Reconstructions

چکیده

The Atlantic is the only ocean basin almost entirely surrounded by passive margins, and a major global long-term sink of carbonate carbon that has evaded subduction. Quantifying history accumulation in been limited absence well-defined regional compensation depth (CCD) models. We determine CCD for northern North Atlantic, central South use these reconstructions to compute mass flux tectonic framework at 0.5 m.y. intervals since 66 Ma. find total grown 2.5-fold from ∼1,500 Mt Ma ∼3,800 present day. overall Cenozoic increase toward day punctuated “carbonate crash” phases mid-Eocene ∼44–38 mid-late Miocene ∼19–8 During times decreases ∼45 ∼25 C/yr, likely caused dissolution reductions productivity. Reduced also coincides with reduced calcification rates small coccolithophores previously observed offshore Africa. After ∼8 rises maximum ∼75 C/yr ∼3 Ma, possibly driven enhanced nutrients into ocean. Our curves resulting are useful calibrating chemistry models, constraining terrestrial weathering rates, climate perturbations, cycle

History of Seawater Carbonate Chemistry, Atmospheric CO2, and Ocean Acidification

Humans are continuing to add vast amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) to the atmosphere through fossil fuel burning and other activities. A large fraction of the CO2 is taken up by the oceans in a process that lowers ocean pH and carbonate mineral saturation state. This effect has potentially serious consequences for marine life, which are, however, difficult to predict. One approach to address the...

An abyssal carbonate compensation depth overshoot in the aftermath of the Palaeocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum

1 The PETM represents one of the largest and most abrupt greenhouse warming events in Earth’s history. Marine and terrestrial records document a global >2.5‰ negative carbon isotope excursion (CIE; refs 1–3) coincident with global mean surface ocean warming of >4 °C (ref. 4) and geochemical and sedimentological evidence for ocean acidification5,6. Collectively, these lines of evidence suggest a...
